Modelový Parlament Slovenska

National conference

Our flagship event. 150 students from all over Slovakia come together to experience parliamentary democracy first-hand, from drafting a bill to voting on it.

Plenary chamber

How the conference works

  1. Day 1

    Opening and parties

Opening ceremony, an introductory debate and a walk-through of the rules of procedure. In their parties, delegates go over ideology, positions and tactics, and elect their leadership.

  2. Days 2–3

    Committees

Committee sessions. Participants analyse a problem, discuss its impact and jointly draft their own bill.

  3. Day 4

    Plenary in parliament

The closing session in the National Council: bills are tabled and debated, amendments proposed, and every bill is put to a vote.

Party caucus meeting

Political parties

Every participant joins one of the model political parties. Together they cover a wide spectrum, from conservative and liberal parties to an extremist anti-system party. MPs defend their party's ideology, draft proposals and look for compromise. In party caucuses they learn how political cooperation, strategy, negotiation and collective decision-making work.

Committees

Just like in a real parliament, the detailed policy debate happens in committees. Each committee covers a different policy area, such as education, the environment, the economy, human rights or foreign affairs.

Voting in the plenary

Debate and vote

Once committee work is done, the bills move to the plenary. In open debate MPs can give speeches, table amendments or respond to colleagues. Rules of procedure guarantee equal opportunities and a culture of dialogue. Finally, every bill is put to a vote.
